This nostalgic birdcage was simple to create. It is a blend of a vintage background printed on rice paper, black chalk paste, a reusable adhesive stencil and the perfect frame.
A search of free printable vintage images turned up many suitable images. I am always drawn to the bunnies...but that was not my objective this time. I taped a piece of rice paper to a piece of regular printer paper. Make sure that the entire top edge is attached. Printer jams are no fun! I printed on my laser printer. Rice paper is delicate so work slowly and gently.. I used 2 prints for this project.
I cut out a piece of cardboard to fit my frame. I applied regular Mod Podge liberally to the cardboard. I focused on the edges to make sure there was coverage.
After the Mod Podgewas completely dried, I placed the image on top of the dried Mod Podge. I used one whole printed image and tore the other into pieces and placed them where they looked best to cover the cardboard.
I placed a piece of parchment paper over the surface and used a pre-heated mini iron to reactivate the dried Mod Podge by ironing over the entire surface.. Make sure the edges are stuck down.
I removed the edges of the paper with a small sanding block.
To protect the image from the sticky stencil, I waxed the surface with the rice paper image applied with surface wax. I used the Birdcage reusable stencil and the Black Velvet Chalk Paste to chalk the birdcage design onto the surface. You can use any color that you wish.
Here is a quick view of trhe process.
